Most of the answers above, are from muppets who occasionally flood in from the homepage, with absolutely no idea what they're talking about, just looking for a chance to say something and get 2 points!
Read the answer from McG, Particularly regarding the laws in your area! Pay attention if it applies to you!
Caps are fine and if you are just out with your mates or popping to the shops then - Yes! why not?
Harder riding may mean that you use some common sense and consider a helmet though!
You will NOT have traumatic head injuries if you don't wear a helmet, you only get injuries if you fall off!!
EDIT: For a case in point, my earlier comment regarding Muppets who dont know what they're talking about -have a look at the answer and link from Zephyrwind!!!!!
Does she know what a cycling cap is?????
EDIT: INTREPIDFAE - Answers like that, really get my back up!!!
If a cyclist did have a helmet and suffered a head injury would you still neny financial liability because the helmet didn't conform to Standard A or B? - 'Oh lets not give treatment to this injured cyclist with the injured leg because he wasn't wearing knee and shin pads!'
Cycle Helmets are only designed to protect against minor impact, Heavy impact will result in head injury anyway, with or without helmet.
Contributory negligence could be cited in EVERY SINGLE accident and in many cases, illness!!!
I could spend all day writing instances of contradiction to your philosophy . . .but I have no need. Think twice !
EDIT: McG it's possible! . . but it's not structured in a way to utilise it, in it's best effect. Perhaps you guys still need a few finer lessons in the British 'technique'!! lol.

RE: The cops. You will get in trouble only if you are riding in an area with a helmet law like California.
Is it possible to wear a cap instead of a helmet? Not on my head. It's physically possible, do what you want. Natural selection is possible too.
What a lot of "cool" riders do is wear cycling caps under their helmets. Acts as a sweat band. They take their brain buckets off at rest stops and have the high fashion cycle cap already in place.
If you are participating in an organized ride or race, you will be required by the organizing body to wear a helmet.
I exercise my right to wear a helmet, even on bike paths.
EDIT: Mr G, is it possible (man, I hope so) that Zephyrwind is employing sarcasm? Isn't that a British tactic?

The cap will keep your hair in place while you are riding, but the helmet will help protect your brain when you crash. Wear the helmet.

Of course! All real cyclists wear caps instead of bike helmets... Look at the tour de france! All of them have caps on! Helmets are for losers who care about safety and living!

You can wear whatever you want.
A bike helmet could save your life a lot more easily than a cap could. But it's your call. Caps look cooler.

depends where you live and what your momma says. Some towns have a law that helmets must be worn...They are a good idea. Even the best rider can get hit by a car and wind up brain dead or paralyzed from a crash.
