68D will be in 187th Battalion, which is lovingly nicknamed the one-eighty heaventh. The DFAC (cafeteria) is great at 187th, probably the best I have eaten at. Also, 187th is waaayy more laid back than 232nd which is where medics go to ait. Do what you are told and be on time in the right uniform and it will be a breeze. You will have a blast. Stay out of trouble and there are lots of things to do in San Antonio. Depending upon your age (21 and up) will determine your activities. There is the Alamo and the Riverwalk downtown along with tons of other touristy things. Tons of cool nightclubs on the Riverwalk. There is the small town of New Braunfels about 30 minutes north on I-35 which has Schlitterbahn; the world's greatest waterpark (if you are going in the summer months). There are the natural bridge caverns and a drive through safari about 20 minutes from Ft Sam. North on I-35 exit Hwy 3009 and turn left/west and go about 10 miles. There are several great shopping centers including The Forum (about 100 stores and restaurants) north on 35 at loop 1604, the Riverwalk mall (downtown) and the Quarry. I have relatives in San An and also went to Whiskey school (medic ait) there. If you have questions or want more specific info send me a message.

Jamie,

You have done well for yourself. YOu have picked an excellent job. I used to be an Army psych tech/medic and my roommate was an OR tech!

Ft. Sam is a GREAT gig because it is in the heart of San Antonio which will give you a great town to visit when you get some time off from training.

I am getting ready to take a job at Fort Sam next summer as Chief of MIlitary Justice (I'm JAG). I'm excited about being back there again because it is a great post in a great city.

For your MOS, be prepared to study. They teach by the "firehose" method, which means they give you a ton of information quickly. If you are disciplined, you will be fine. If you have poor study habits, it will hurt you. The incentive to study is they will send you to another job that you will not like. If did well enough on the ASVAB to get in to the school, you will do fine...just be disciplined.

Things change frequently in the training environment. Last year this time, the commander stopped overnight passes on the weekend because of all the trouble students were getting into in downtown San Antonion on weekends. I don't know if this is still in effect. Regardless, you can still have fun until you have to be back for bed-check.

As a defense attorney, I represented a soldier who was distributing HEROIN(!!!) to other AIT students...so you see, there can be problems. 6 students were convicted after all said/done. Pick your friends wisely.

Another problems is sexual assault/harassment complaints because the male/female ration is about 50/50. A lot of students don't behave and/or handle alcohol well and bad things happen to those who don't behave/act responsibly. It's the same as college. Immature, unsupervised teens and alcohol let loose on a city for the weekend...yikes!

It's great for family to visit because it's in a large city with a large airport, so travel will be convenient.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. I've been in and out of Fort Sam since the mid-80's so seen/done a lot there. I'm extremely excited that my family and I will be there the next two years!!!

I'm proud of your decision to join and wish you the best of luck.

I did AIT at Ft. Sill but spent alot of time at Sam Houston it's hot and muggy, rainy in the winter, but surrounded by some beautiful Texas countryside.

My daughter just finished AIT there. She said they usually get up at 3 AM to run 10 miles. Then they exercise for a few hours. Most of the day is spent crawling in the mud with your M-16. She said many of the recruits were raped repeatedly by the drill sergeants. She's been in four months now and has not been paid. And one last important thing: This is all BS! Thank you for your service to our country! Good luck!
