published statistics for percentages of atheists in countries which appear to be most represented in Y!A. Does anyone have any personal theories on why this is? It could be, for example, that atheists tend to be of higher intelligence than thos of faith, and peope of higher intelligence and therefore greater technical literacy are more likely to contribute to online debate. It could be isolated to Y!A, i.e. not reflected in other internet forums, IRC, etc. Or it could be that the quoted stats on belief are wrong. Anyone got any thoughts? (and sources might be nice...)

I will not go so far as to say that it is because atheists are smarter. I will though say that those who have an interest in learning are more likely to be an atheist and also more likely to frequent the Internet. There is also the fact that many many Christians in particular believe that it is a sin to read information that does not agree with their beliefs.

Michelle Chang- I study Science on my own and rarely have questions that i want an answer on from Y/A. As far as wanting others to agree with you. Yes, that is a fairly normal Human trait. I for though am always open to others opinions and facts if they have them.

Warrior of worship- That is why a majority of physicists and artists are atheistic right?

As somewhat predatory %. animals needless to say maximum people decide for the vulnerable, purely like different %. predators do. The question turns into what we will do approximately it. Draw extra blood or help them out? i'm approximately 50/50 on that one and could overtly admit it. I am an atheist, im no more intelligant than anyone with alternative beliefs, i just contribute to questions, maybe people of alternative faiths dont feel the need to as much, i dont know, or maybe because u are an atheist you "look" for comments by other atheists more so than you would anything else

I think Atheists may find this a safer place to debate religion than in their outside lives where they face the very real prospect of being fired or otherwise discriminated against if they question christian beliefs. Christians pretty much run the country in case you'd forgotten and have stated that they trust child molesters more than they trust Atheists.

Maybe all the Y!A Atheists are just huddled in R&S so that it appears there are more. Are you talking all of Y!A? If so, where are you getting your data for that conclusion?

Maybe Atheism is growing at crazy rates. When is the last time a study was done to determine the number of Atheists in given countries?

Interesting question.

If atheist are supposed to be so intelligent, why are the majority of their questions, just plain stupid?

Even this question can only rank as somewhat intelligent.
I can't say its fully intelligent because of the minor spelling errors and the fact that you attempt to lead the reader into believeing that athesits are superior to theists when that is something clearly unprovable.

I don't believe there are all that many true blue full fledged Atheists in the world. I only know 2 beside myself one is my husband and the other is is brother. That's it. So either there are more in my life who haven't "come out" or there aren't anymore. I'm not saying that because I don't know them they aren't there. It's just that I truly know a lot of people and i only have 2 who agree with me. I think it's because we don't have "churches"...lol That's why I do come on R&S. It makes me feel part of something.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Alot of people you think are atheists might be agnostic or something else. Not that it could make up the whole difference. I assume since non-christians have been basically oppressed in the state we are getting more vocal.

I think most people that come here as an atheist are afraid to admit they are when asked by someone out in the real world. I proclaim my atheistic beliefs with pride and a little arrogance.

I really think that a lot of kids go into this site---not necessarily highly intelligent people. From my dealing with quite a few teenagers, they feel "safe" on this site to state that they are atheist and to express their viewpoint.

My neice and nephew told me that they don't believe in God, but said they could never tell their parents because they would be upset.
