Every kg carried on a plane costs money in fuel cost. Less luggage equals faster loading & unloading too? Faster turnaround equals lower costs?

As a formal ground crew worker for airlines, less baggage does in fact save money and time! I think your statement is quite reasonable actually. While passengers do weigh more than bags, the bags really aernt far off on certain hauls (keep in mind some people check in more than one bag!). The total weight handled in the pit of an airplane may surprise a lot of people.

A few airlines are now starting to charge for luggage (what next?), but instead of the passenger saving money, the people who check-in luggage just have to pay more, and many budget airlines have low weight allowances for luggage and charge high prices for anything over their allowance. So, in effect what you're suggesting is already taking place, but instead of savings for passengers with no luggage, it's just higher prices for people with luggage, but what do you expect from an industry that tries to squeeze every last dime from it's customers. Maybe they can start charging skinny customers less as well, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon either.
