I know why I go. Read about Hawaii and watched movies & looked at pictures. Many years I got hooked on Mitchner's best selling book Hawaii and have read it several times. The movie that was made did a pretty good job but only covered a small portion of the book.
Finally went - and I will never forget the fragrance that wafts over you when you get off the plane. Stayed at the Pacific Beach Hotel on Kalakau Ave across from Waikaiki beach. Took every tour possible. I was enchanted the entire time. The second time I went I stayed in a high rise condo facing the mountains and overlooking the Ala Waie canal but found myself drawn back to the beach (only a block). Spent a week in Maui in a beautiful condominium resort at Kanaapali, Spent a lot of time walking on the beach & visiting other hotels there and it's lovely. Again, I found myself missing Waikiki and the balcony where I could watch everything going on down below with the joggers out there at 5:30-6:00 am and the surfer's already out in the ocean waiting for the waves. Me having my first coffee of the day - Kona coffee is so good. The Market Place. Fabulous hotels and food.
I know why I go to Hawaii - my sons both loved my stories & pictures. In fact, one of my sons was married on the beach but made all the arrangements here (Canada) before he & his fiancee left. They spent one week at the Holiday Inn, Waikaiki and one week cruising the islands. They had a great time as well (spent a few evernings at the Hard Rock Cafe).
Well, that's my tale of the South Pacific.

i go there to be back home with my friends and ohana (family) who i miss soooo much. almost all of my vacation time is spent there now. oh and don't listen to DocDnStLouie up there...who said that locals absolutely hate white people. i am a local and always will be no matter where in the world i live because home is where your heart is and my heart is in hawaii nei on the beautiful island of maui in a little town called waihe'e. i am half-white, hawaiian, filipino, and chinese and i don't hate any white people! i had a lot of white friends and family. there are some locals who are rude to white people but it's not EVERYONE. the only time i will ever be rude to a white person is if he/she disrespects my culture and the aina (land). DocDnStLouie says he lived there for years...he must have disrespected A LOT of people in those years because hawaii is such a diversely cultural place where a local can be pure white if he/she was born/raised there.
anyways, if you plan on visiting i hope you enjoy your stay. just remember to be respectful, be yourself, and have fun!
aloha!

I recently moved to go to school at Hawai'i Pacific University. It's absolutely beautiful here, alot of people come here to visit Waikiki, the North Shore, Diamond Head, the mountains, the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, etc. There's black sand beaches on the Big Island. There's waterfalls here in Oahu, I know it's less populated and more country paradise-like in Kauai. You can even snowboard on the Big Island. The beaches are amazing of course, and it's a very laid-back place.
