Because people voted to not have the tax on their wages at the last 7 general elections.
People also want the government to spend more on hospitals, schools, police, prisons, roads, etc etc the list is endless.
The money does not appear by magic.
Interestingly, this government has seen fuel prices (at the pump, not just the tax level) increase by about a quarter. The last Tory government saw them increase by almost 130% and introduced the "fuel tax escalator", a real terms yearly increase in the tax on fuel.
Rest assured, if it wasn't on fuel it would be on your wages, so it may as well be on the fuel!
I think the real issue is people are feeling angry they can't lie to their accountants if it is paid at the petrol pump.
Petrol is cheaper today in real terms as a percentage of income than it was in 1950.
Anyone who thinks Europe is much cheaper is deluded. In France it is a few pence cheaper, and they have very high motorway tolls too!
PS the recent rises have not been due to additional tax, which is admittedly high, but it is because of very high oil prices. The climbing prices in turn are because of dwindling supplies, insecurity in oil rich nations and the falling value of the US$, and oil is traded in US$. As time goes on it will get more expensive, and it is beyond our control.
Tony, clearly you don't have eyes in your head. This government has a programme to replace or refurbish every single secondary school in the country. No more crumbling Victorian classrooms with leaky rooves which were commonplace under the Tories. Just open your eyes, they are everywhere.

The government has to raise money to run their program. They do this in various ways but mostly taxation. If it was not on fuel it would be on something else. Of course the environmental lobby will applaud the increase in fuel tax on the basis that it will cut down on people using carbon based fuels

Because we vote the party that our parents have voted for. We are not studding the politicians for what they saying they do for us. We are not asking nothing in exchange for what we are paying in taxes. till when we start to ask value for money doesn't matter who is on power they will do what they would like. in the last 10 years the taxes have soared high sky but not improvement has being created in education, health care, road safety more roads. question is where our money is going. OK for taxes but what all this money are buying. That is a real question to be answered.

Because we're a bunch of suckers who let them get away with everything they want. Immigration, H.I.P.S. Fuel tax.... You name it. We will not give up our luxuries for the moment to gain the greater good. We should boycott the pumps for a whole day once a week 'till they start to get the message.

they can! I've gone environmentally friendly and sold my car and use buses and trains now.
Next, we will pay more tax because the government needs more cash since all the smokers have quit!!
My option - Move to Spain!!
