Have patience. Try using the same litter that the place you got him from used...sometimes a change in litter confuses them. Don't put him in the litter box, but restrict his movement to include the litter box area and his food and sleep areas and nowhere else. As you know, kitties usually take to their litter boxes without a problem. Your baby is having a hard time for some weird reason. Work with him and don't give up! Write back if this doesn't work!

Wow, bet that make the house smell fragrant.
Best thing to do is keep him in the same room as the box with the door closed for a good period of time. Or if the room is too big and you fear he may continue to poop outside of the box, maybe cage him for a while with the box inside so he'll have no choice but to use the box. Leave as little room as possible. He'll get the idea.

some cats / kittens are some what stubborn and need extra time and even some extra push to get them going in the direction they need to . I have had to even take the cat to the box and take his / her paw and using the scratching motion with their over into the ltter box after a few times will give her / him the idea that , this is what they should be doing , just do that a few times like i said take their paw and just scratch / pushing their paw back and forth into the box and he / she will get it . I have done this like I said and it does work of course if you have other kittens sharing box that will need to stop , alot of kittens need their space and or their own box . They like their independence and their space so make sure he / she has that too. HOPE THIS HELPS .

try "crate training" him like a dog for awhile. get a good-sized dog crate - one that's big enough for the litter box and his small bed and a little space to move around and for small food and water dishes. you can also put a plank across the width of the crate before you put the top part on (that is if you're using a Verikennel) so he has some place he can jump up to. keep him in the crate until he goes in his box, then take him out for awhile. keep him primarily in the box until he's stopped soiling his bedding or "play" area and gotten used to going only in the box.

You don't say, but it sounds like you got him a "covered" litterbox. That's why he feels "trapped".Try using something open and with shorter sides......like a 9x11 cake pan. Also, you can use a pine pelleted litter....could be he doesn't like the feel of cat litter on his feet! I had a cat like that, and putting the pine pellets in a shorter box (low sides) worked. Hope this helps.....Good luck.........
