A cruise from California to Australia is super long. Trust me, I did 20 years in the Navy and even the trip from Hawaii or from Japan to Australia is many weeks.

There are a few out of Los Angeles, but the cruise is usually over 30 days and you have to fly back. You might be better off doing a one way flight to Sydney and cruising back to Los Angeles. You will see some awesome ports.

Vacationstogo.com lists Holland America cruises from Seattle [9/19 & 22/08] and Vancouver [9/21/08]. Dawn Princess from San Francisco [9/24/08] and HA Volendam from LA [9/25/08].

Looking at the major cruise lines, I only found cruises that depart from Seattle and return to San Diego.
