Hey, I have just bought some flake white oil paint for Winsor Newton, and it says it contains lead, and can cause kidney, or nervous system damage and/or failure. What? All I wanted was some white oil paint. What should I do now? Are there any other brands that do not have lead in them?

Lead is dangerous if you digest it. Some even claim the end of the Roman empire was brought on because they had lead plumbing. Until not so long ago theater makeup did not contain lead but WAS mainly lead. They used it for literally hundreds of years.

Until (the same) few years paint wa lead based. It isn't anymore, not even this paint. It has traces. Still the warning has to be on there.

As long as you don't eat it there is no real danger.

Also don't eat the cadmium, crimson ... you know what? Don't eat any paint and you will live a long happy life.

Led oxids are used as pigments for some colours. Led white is maybe the most famous. They are all toxic, and paint industry is actually trying to replace them with syntetically made pigments. Led pigments are also not mixable with all pigments , for the chemical reaxtions and change of colour it makes.
Please be sure that if you use it, you do not eat it (keep aay from your mouth) and that you wash your hands well after u used it.
There are differnt whites in the painitnig market, with differen hues, opacity etc. Zink white or Titanium white may be a safer replacement.

lead is dangerous when eaten. it used to be in house paints; people would paint their window frames or cribs, years later small children would gnaw at it, or pull off flakes and eat it; in the 1970s a huge study found that lead in gasoline (stops engine knocking) was put out in exhaust and settled on the plants near roads - apples, grain, etc.

after the uproar lead was taken out of gas, strong warnings needed to be issued. they are on your paint tubes because of that.

most lead is out of artists' paints now tho you can still find red lead or various others in shops' older stock. lead is used for its consistency and the gorgeous way it melds with the linen, like a heavy silk satin over someone's limbs.

don't eat it, drink it, leave it on your skin, or smoke anywhere near it. (but you won't do that anyway). the amount of lead an artist is usually exposed to is fairly small, compared to the amount of lead dust there used to be on farm produce.

I wear disposable plastic gloves when I paint. This keeps the thinner and paints off of my skin....you might give this a try.

all oil paints have toxic substances in them, u just have to keep them off your skin, n have good ventilation. i have a friend who got lead poisoning off crayons when he was little, and another by cutting glass with diamond.
