Beserkers were about pure strength.

Samurai were about using their training to defeat the trained and untrained, no matter how big and strong they were.

The Samurai.

Samurai vs. a Viking berserker? I would have to go with Viking, only because of strength & size & a Japanese samurai would not know how to fight a big opponent like that who is generally out of his mind & wants to tear you apart. Vikings were know to do a little bit of the pugilism & a bit of wrestling & with that size & strength I would have to give it to the Viking. Also, samurai unarmed techniques were mainly used for opponents on the battle field & not so much a one on one unarmed fight. But Vikings had Holmgang, which is a one on one dueling system that could be fought with or without weapons &/or to the death. Once again I still say Viking.

Could go either way. But if the berserker was all hopped up on psilocybin mushrooms, as has been suggested, my money would be on him.

"Modern scholars believe that certain examples of berserker rage to have been induced coluntarily by the consumption of drugs such as the hallucinogenic mushroom *Amanita muscaria* (Howard D. Fabing. "On Going Berserk: A Neurochemical Inquiry." Scientific Monthly. 83 [Nov. 1956] p. 232), or massive quantities of alcohol (Robert Wernick. The Vikings. Alexandria VA: Time-Life Books. 1979. p. 285). While such practices would fit in with ritual usages, other explanations for the berserker's madness have been put forward, including self-induced hysteria, epilepsy, mental illness or genetic flaws (Peter G. Foote and David m. Wilson. the Viking Achievement. London: Sidgewick & Jackson. 1970. p. 285)."

Although the Viking would be heavier and stronger than the Samurai I think.. the Samurai could still use Judo to balance it out. I dunno who'd win actually but I think the Viking Beserkers uncontrolled attacks would hinder it seriously

Interesting question.

Probably the Samurai. But the berserkers were also very fearsome. It's hard to say. I presume you meant two warriors of roughly the same size, age, strength, etc.

Hand to hand? Your Viking is probably going to be bigger than the Samurai, so I'd go for size.
