My friend just told me that she is getting an online degree through Penn Foster. Does anyone know if this college is legitimate? Or is it a diploma mill. It is awful expensive. I dont want to see her throw her money away.

Penn Foster (http://www.pennfoster.edu/) is not a diploma mill and they are not comparatively expensive. By comparison, I pay $1500 per class (not program or degree) where I attend right now and the state school I got my BA from was $900+ per class. Penn Foster charges less than that for a semester in their associate's degrees and full course of study in their vocationals.

Penn Foster is accredited by the DETC (http://www.detc.org/) which is recognized by the US Dept. of Education (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp) and the CHEA (http://www.chea.org/default.asp)

The issue with Penn Foster (and the similar Ashworth) is that they are not regionally accredited. Most colleges will not accept their degrees in transfer (though some Penn Foster courses have been ACE evaluated and will transfer to some other colleges).

Now, if your friend is doing a vocational/occupational program at Penn Foster, that credit wouldn't transfer to a higher college anyway (even if it were regionally accredited) because of the level of the courses. If your friend is completing an associates degree and plans to get a bachelor's later, she may run into a transferability issue.

I only advocate DETC programs at the vocational level - these aren't the best option for degree level study unless you're certain hat the degree will be terminal (not going on for advanced study). A degree from a DETC school simply limits further options. A vocational certificate from a DETC school is just as valid (IMHO) as one from any other vocational program such as your local technical/community college as these aren't intended as transfer credentials.

I'm not real sure. I know that for a long time there were literally DOZENS of people up here cheating -- especially in the "Homework Help" category. However, I've not seen one in a long time, so it appears that PF has clamped down somehow. So, I'd say it seems to be at least legit enough to do that! :) Truly though, I'd enroll in an online program from a "brick and mortar" university if I were you though. For instance UCLA (if they have one). Then your degree would just say UCLA and not specify if it was on line or not and no one would know the difference. Hope I helped!
