John saw a symbolic version of the War in Heaven and its continuation on earth. The woman represents the church of God. The child she brought forth is the Kingdom of God- the government that will exist on the earth during Jesus Christ's millennial reign.
There are two powers on the earth and in the midst of the inhabitants of the earth-the power of God and the power of the devil. When God has had a people on the earth, it matters not in what age, Lucifer, the son of the morning, and the millions of fallen spirits that were cast out of heaven, have warred against God, against Christ, against the work of God, and against the people of God. Whenever the Lord set His hand to perform any work, those powers labored to overthrow it.

The classic position of the Roman Catholic Church identifies the Woman with the Virgin Mary because she is the mother of Jesus, the child who will rule the nations with a rod of iron(see Revelation 19:11–16).
This is what the Church always taught and always believed, from the beginning.
You only see the misinterpretation as "Israel" in the late 1800's with the rise of Dispensational Premillennialists, unheard of as a doctrine for the first 18 centuries of Christendom.

the 1,260 days represents the time in which it took the promise made to Abraham and "his seed" to be fulfilled...
14 generations from Abraham to King David, 14 from David to the exile of Israel into Babylon, and 14 from the exile to the coming of Jesus Christ.
14 x 3 =42 months as seen in revelation
42 x 30 days/month = 1,260 days
1,260 / 360 days/per year = 3.5 (time, times and half a time)
they all have the same basic meaning in prophecy for the reader. it is the fulfillment and completion of the promise of the salvation of man. it also represents the time of completion from the start of the church (woman)at pentecost to the return of Christ and the eternal salvation of her children .

It is Mary the Blessed Virgin and Jesus our Lord and Savior
Revelation 12: "And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery" (Rev. 12:1–2). Who is this newborn child? He is described as the messianic king exercising his dominion. In verse 5, the author of Revelation chose the messianic Psalm 2 to describe how this child will "rule all the nations with a rod of iron" (Rev. 12:5, Ps. 2:9). This royal son is taken up to heaven to sit on a throne (Rev. 12:5), and he ushers in the kingdom of God by defeating the devil: "Now the kingdom of our God has come, for the accuser has been throne down" (12:10). Certainly, this newborn child is the royal Messiah, King Jesus.
In this light it is clear who this woman is who gave birth to the messiah: It is Mary. Some people have interpreted this woman in Revelation 12 as merely a symbol either for the Old Testament people of Israel or for the New Testament Church and therefore have concluded that the woman cannot be an individual (i.e., Mary). However, this "either-or" proposition is foreign to the biblical worldview, in which individuals often symbolically represent collective groups. For instance, Adam represented all humanity (Rom. 5:19), and Jacob stood for all of Israel (Ps. 44:4). Given this biblical notion called "corporate personality," the woman in Revelation 12 should be understood as both an individual (Mary) and a symbol for the people of God.
But for our purposes, once we see that this woman is Mary, the mother of Jesus, it is important to note how she is portrayed as queen in this passage. Her royal office is hinted at by the imagery of the sun, moon, and twelve stars, which recalls the Old Testament story of Joseph’s dream in which the sun, moon, and stars bow down before him, symbolizing his future authority (Gen. 37:9–11).
"I will put enmity between you and the woman!" What woman? Who is the woman whose "seed" (offspring) saves? Who is this woman who is mentioned, in the context of Eve's sin, as being one whom God will have as the enemy of Satan?

Yes, those are common beliefs. I believe the child being taken up to heaven immediately indicates he was born righteous and also that the devil was taken out of the way. However, Satan is to appear later to test the body and Bride of Christ.
