I have dark brown hair with a natural (and odd) streak of grey in it. I've had the grey for many many years and it used to be cool. Now its spread and I hate it. I want to dye my hair but don't want to mess it up. Are there any temporary but kinda long lasting dyes out there? How often do you do roots (my hair grows fast)?

I Would Try One Of The Long - Lasting Demi-Permanent Dyes Like Clairol® Natural Instincts™ Or L'OREAL® Casting™ If You Follow The Directions, You Can't Mess It Up. Also, Use A Shade That's One Level LIGHTER Than Your Natural Shade, The Product Won't Lighten Your Hair But Will Make The Gray Look Like Natural Highlights and People Generally Look Better With Lighter Hair As They Get Older. Because Their Skin Tones Fade.

P.S. With These Products You Generally Don't Need To 'Root Retouch' As They Gradually Fade. When You Need To Recolor, You Just 'Shampoo-In' Like The First Time.

Clairol's Natural Instincts. There is no ammonia, and it is extremely gentle on your hair. I'm not sure how it does with grey coverage, but I think it will work - when you're out, take a look at the box and see if it says anything.

Roots are done every 4-6 weeks. My mom just re-dyes her hair every 6ish weeks and skips the root touch up.

They have a nonpermanent hair color that I've used before. I can't remember what kind I used but I think it was a Clairol Natural Instincts... maybe not. I used it to cover a horrible dye job that I got and I was very happy with the results. You can get them to last up to 28 washes (which is what I got), but if you put it on blonde hair, it doesn't really return to the original blonde. When it starts to fade, just get another one.

Buy the colour that matches your natural colour and also says it covers grey. To start with buy a semi permanent colour so you are not stuck with it for long should it not turn out. I would go to a professional though if you have the time and money...they know what they are doing and all too often the colour on the kits you buy over the counter are not what the results actually turn out to be.

There are semi-permament dyes in stores. They last about 6 weeks depending on how many times you wash your hair. If you wash it every day you might get 3 weeks out of it. They are with the permament dyes so just be sure to pick up the right box.
