I got my wisdom tooth taken out yesterday (friday) and i'm about what my limits are on eating.. I really dislike soup I never eat that but all day yesterday thats what I ate and it ended up making me sick this morning. I want food with substance but it seems like everything I wanna eat my parents are telling me its not a good idea. People that have gotten their wisdom teeth (tooth) removed what did you eat and another thing is, cigarettes. I know it's bad to smoke cigarettes because of dry socket but i'm a regular smoker and Ive cut back but I still wanna smoke atleast 2 a day is that bad. No criticism please i'm just trying to figure out how bad the cigs really are for me right now.. I admit to being a little stubborn but i'm just unclear on what I should do. Also the doctor told me to be off for 3 days but i'm considering going to work tomorrow (my 3rd day) I havent decided yet just trying to get someone elses opinion.

Avoiding anything that creates suction in your mouth (smoking, using a straw, rinsing vigorously, even eating some types of food) is crucial for a few days. Why?

After wisdom teeth are pulled, a clot forms in the empty socket. This clot keeps the socket reasonably sanitary and promotes healing. If the clot is dislodged, nerve endings are exposed, healing time is greatly delayed, and the pain is excruciating. The activities listed above can dislodge or dry out the clot. In addition, smoking causes blood vessels, including capillaries, to spasm and constrict, limiting essential blood supply to the wounded area and increasing the healing time.

If you just can't stand another cup of soup, you can put many types of food into a blender, liquefy them, and carefully drink them. You mention that soup made you feel sick; your nausea and malaise may be a result of the anesthetic you were given, or of any antibiotics or pain medication you were given.

If your physician says "3 days off" you might want to follow his instructions. If you're feeling sick and unable to eat solid foods yet, you might not have enough stamina for your job.

My wisdom teeth were removed in 1994. I ended up with 4 dry sockets, as my jaw was broken during the surgery and I could not keep my mouth fully closed. I also found that you can put chili dogs in a blender and they taste very good if you're sick of soup!

If your tooth is fully erupted you are correct to say that it would be easier to remove than if it was partly erupted or not through at all. But the main problem with wisdom teeth, especially lower ones, is that the shape of the roots is very variable and this can make the tooth difficult to remove. If I were you I would ask the dentist to take an xray of the tooth to see: a. Will it be easy to remove.? b. How much decay is in the tooth - can it be easily filled? Really, the only person who can advise you on your individual problem is a good dentist and it is very unwise to pay any attention at all to the experiences of others whose dental circumstances may well be very different. Sometimes in life you just have to surrender to the advice of the professional - but wouldn't you rather do that than take the advice of someone on a website like this. Good luck.
