For a huge part of American history, really with the exception of the 1950's through 1975, the US has had a very small active military in relationship to the population. The National Guard was for much of that time the 'reserve" for when a war broke out and then they were federalized and made regular Army. Technically there was no National Guard units any of those places and none overseas right now-it is unconstitutional for a state to send troops outside the borders of the country; the National Guard units are activated and placed under the control of the US Army or Air Force (Air National Guard) and then are federal troops. The state governor has no power or authority over them once that happens so they are not National Guard they are Army. Units can trace there history and battle ribbons because the unit is the same regardless of whether they are state controlled or federal so the Army units which fought are the same people as the National Guard units and when the war is over they revert to state control and become National Guard again.

My hat is off to the Marketing guy's for that one.

There were National Guard and Reserve Forces activated prior to WWII. Not all Units but some. My Dad made it to Dutch Harbor in April 42 as a member of A Battery/206th Coast Artillery, Arkansas National Guard. They had been there since before Dec 7 41 if my memory is correct.

Not sure about Korea in 1950 but suspect some units were activated.

There are 97 National Guardsmen on The Wall in DC along with 5758 names belonging to Reserve Members.

As there was no Army until June 1775, that was only a paper lion, each Colony had it's own militia. Those ultimately became the Guard as known today.

ya i got goosebumps too and i wanna join my states defense force

the problem is that the national guard was federalized in 1933 it is still a state force but it is also apart of the federal govt

and in extreme cases the president can call apon a small group of national guard units to serve with the army only when it is needed this way the draft is avoided

dont join the guard join your states deffense force its a military force but the governor is the commander in chief.

the state deffense forces are only to be used to protect the state and may NEVER be called apon by the president or congress
it is assentially a real militia here tos erve the state and is not a federal force

N' Cognito is basically right but not on the money. We have always had a 'Regular Army' but in the early years of the Republic it was intentionally kept small. The National Guard under its many historic titles has been involved in every conflict we've ever been engaged in. Surprise surprise the Regular Army is still too small to do it all! Good luck Matt, can't say that it was the best choice of duty but I certainly respect you for doing it. I was Armor and Armored Cavalry myself. Never did like digging holes in the ground. I rode around in my Individual Fighting Position.

If I were you I would join active duty because If I am possibly going to be in combat I would want all the training I could get, not just some one weekend a month thing.
