does anyone know of a motel in pasadena that is not expensive and preferably within walking distance of a metro station?

Yes! I cannot recommend highly enough the SAGA. It is right across from Pasadena City College and a short walk from the transit system.
I am so high on this place because other motels are not family-owned and may have a shady reputation. This place is clean and friendly. My best friend had her family stay there often, and later, when my family came and tried somewhere else, I directed them there. I even was there for two days when we had our house fumigated once.
They have a pool and Continental breakfast.
