Only about 5% of Freemasonry is secret, everything else is completely open. Try me, ask and I bet I'll answer a minimum of 95% of them. The offers there if you really want to know.
Any business holds it's meetings behind closed doors, the vatican votes in the pope, behind close doors, bishops, cardinals, CEO's, Team Managers, Sports Coaches etc etc all meet behind closed doors, ergo in SECRET, but I do not see them being accused of any kinda immoral deed.
It is only because Freemasonry openly states, it keeps certain things secret, that peoples attention is drawn towards it. Think about it, "secret" meetings go on every day, everywhere, nothing and no one is 100% transparent. I bet you keep your social security number secret, if you had a meeting with the bank manager about your finances, if your wife was giving birth, any number of things, you wouldn't allow any tom, dick or harry to attend!
Very little of Freemasonry is secret, in fact 0 is if you can be bothered to look. The content of our role plays are not secret, but we keep that to ourselves to benefit and improve the experience of those who wish to join. The secret element is our modes of recognition, a sign, token and word for each degree, so thats 3 signs, 3 tokens, and 3 words. Thats it.
And in all honesty, it is not the signs themselves, the tokens themselves, or the words themselves that are important or their use together, but the action of keeping a secret that Freemasonry holds dear.
Freemasonry promotes and encourages moral and honest behaviour. What better test at the beginning than asking someone to keep a secret. The action of keeping a secret demonstrates honesty and is also a moral act.
And out of a lifetime, 3 degrees, one meeting a week, 3 signs, 3 tokens, and 3 words doesn;t really amount to much being secret.

I am a Freemason - there are no secrets in Freemasonry, they have been available to the public for over 300 years.
That doesn't mean every Freemason runs around telling everyone, and in some areas they are more private about their membership than in other areas (in Europe for instance, where Hitler once rounded them up and killed them; you'd be private too)...
to some other responses:
* although the official catholic position is that you are in grave sin and cannot receive Holy Communion if you are a Freemason, but I know tons of Catholics that are Freemasons - God decides who gets into Heaven, not the Vatican, not the Pope. If you want more info on this particular topic, please let me know.
* it is not an elite society, there are many non-wealthy Freemasons
* I YouTube sites are Bible thumping nonsense...
* ALL of the conspiracy theories have been proven false many times over
* there are not 33 ladder levels of freemasonry, someone's been reading the anti-mason propaganda and believing it...

It's not so much of a secret, anyone can find out about it. Christian fundies have a field day trying to say it's secret and bashing it. My father was a Mason all of his adult life. I never met a man as honest, caring and giving as him. They may be the descendants of Knights Templar. That would explain the secrecy, look what happened to thier leader.

Part of the rules of the men's club.
As one works their way up the 33 plus ladder levels of Freemasonry, they are charged money (aka educational course fees).
Why do colleges and universities charge students for their secret knowledge?
It's called capitalism.

From my understanding, it's not so much a secret as something you have to be trained for. It's more than just a boys club meeting ever so often. Hopefully a mason will answer you better than I have.

I will answer this as a mason. It is secret because it is a fraternity with alot of rituals involved. It is not open to the public for those reasons. I left the masonic lodge because I did not have the same beliefs of a creator anymore and that is one of the requirements to join.

It's was based on the idea of trade secrets. When masons(bricklayers) would take on an apprentice, they had to make sure that the apprentice was not going to pass the secrets of their business to a rival. and that's the kind of thing it was founded on. It's not like they do secret pagan blood rituals, it was pretty much a business thing, now a brotherhood.

It is hardly a secret anymore. The biggest mystery is why anyone in their right mind cares about having secrets. If you are living in truth then you are surely going to have some that understand and some that don't. End of ballgame.

My great-grandpa is a Freemason. He is quiet about it because people have negative assumptions of Freemasons and will be very suspicious towards him if he went around telling people he was a Freemason.

It really isn't. Google it and dig around. You can find their whole ritual or anything else you might want.
