Is it one of the older fat PS2's or is it a slim one? If it's a fat PS2, then it's probably the infamous DRE (Disk Read Error). The laser probably needs to be adjusted, because it has gone out of position. You could send it out to Sony, to have them fix it for you (I'd advise against this since it cost more $). You could find a local shop that will fix it for you, most little stores that sell used games & consoles offer this service. Of you could try to fix it yourself. Before you do anything, you should try to clean the lense and dust it out before you mess with it, or have someone else mess with it.
Personally I had no luck fixing my 1st PS2, and actually ended up breaking a connector off the motherboard. But that was before I found these instructions (use at your own risk):
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
Make sure that you don't force the CD tray open or closed. Just let it open and close it with the button, otherwise you can pull the tray off track and create a whole mess with the new problem. Be careful not to pull on on the cables, and re-tape the one on the case if you pull off the existing tape. Make sure you mark the wheel, like the instructions say; I didn't do this and I would have helped for sure.

You have a common problem that happens to the PS2, it is to do with a burned out coil on the laser unit. Unfortunatly the only fix is to have it or swap it out yourself (not to difficult). A place to start that I have found to get a laser is http://www.bizrate.com/playstation2accessories/products__keyword--ps2+laser+replacement.html
Otherwise just do a Goggle or Yahoo search for PS2 laser replacement.

lens needs cleaning, there is a special spray (professional way) for that or use some alcohol with Q-tips (homebrew way, lens can be damaged). If cleaning didn't help - lens needs to be replaced, it wears off with time.
