You're right! Jesus was a common name in those days. That's why He was usually called, Jesus of Nazareth to distinguish Him from all the other little boys that were named Jesus. It is the Hebrew name for Joshua or Yeshua, and so, the Hebrew is Yeshua; the Greek is Jesus. And so, here's another one in the Bible called Jesus, which is called Justus.

That is not too unusual.

JESUS, Hebrew for YESHUA, is akin to our modern-day name JOSHUA, and was equally popular for that time.

Since you found this so interesting, you might enjoy learning about the Hebrew roots of Christianity. Send me a message if you want some links to get started.

Jesus was actually a fairly common name back in those days. God wanted Jesus to have everything seem common about him, so that he could be even more glorified in the end. So God appointed his name to be common, too.

Jesus was a common name. In Hebrew it is actually Yshiwa, the same name in English as Joshua, the biblical hero.

Yshiwa/Jesus/Joshua would obviously be a popular name for young boys.
