Not really, people spend thousands on ONE person. It doesn't mean that's a bad thing, and it doesn't mean she's forgotten about family.
Don't jump to conclusions like that.

Your mother's friend might be feeling guilty because perhaps she doesn't spend as much TIME with her kids as she thinks she should. I hope the kids do not become spoiled.
Being with family is the ultimate gift.
In my family, all of the kids and their kids have all grown up, so getting gifts for all of them is both impossible and extraneous... our Christmas celebration is a second Thanksgiving feast. My dad died on March 1st of this year, and we nearly lost my mom twice to heart attacks in the two months following that.

Maybe she feels like she has to spend that much money on each of them..or maybe her mother couldnt do it..so now that she can do something that her mother could never do....it would make her feel alot better about herself as a mother..and knowing that she made her kids happy this christmas

I see no reason why you can't be with your family and spend money on them!
I think it totally depends on the circumstances. I'm guessing millionaires spend way more than that kind of money on their kids at Christmas regularly. Or perhaps that's the one main time the kids get presents? I'm certainly not about to judge with so little information available to me.

$400 each...well, I guess the sadness of it mostly depends on what this person's income is. Paying $400 on presents for a kid seems a lot when your income is $15000 a year, but rather little when your income is $200000 a year. It's a relative thing.

Maybe she likes GIVING--like I do. I get great joy from watching people unwrap gifts I choose so carefully for them.
You have no clue what goes on behind their door, so stop judging people.
