My respect lies with the officer who know's what he is doing and doesn't get anyone killed. I could care less how ripped he is, just get me and my Marines home in one piece.

Respecting the rank is mandatory but the man or woman wearing must earn that respect. As a general rule of thumb brains and the will to suceed trumps brawn.

Enlisted people respect officers that know what they are doing, do what is right and treat them correctly. Stupid officers get you killed regardless of if they are "ripped" or not and you respect the guy who is going to keep you alive. The military is not a body building contest.

Soldiers automatically respect the rank, to a degree. Each individual has to earn any personal respect, and Brains is normally more respected than brawn.

Brains more than brawn. Gung-ho is not highly admired by the common soldier, but being a smart leader who does not unnecessarily risk his men, is respected.
It's more than "follow me"----a LOT more.
But if his physical condition allows him to take the same punishment you do, in addition to his brains, all the better then.

It all depends on the mission or the job. The leadership in the military is not that different than the leadership in any corporation. Some are good and some are asses.

I served under a lieutenant-commander in Kuwait who was "ripped", but he was a worthless piece of crap.
