Also - many law enforcement agencies have a cut off of 35 to start initially. The Feds do, and many state trooper agencies do. So, even w/o HIV, it doesn't look that good for that particular agency you just asked about.

He will not be hired.

Universal Precautions (protection against Blood Born pathogens and communicable diseases), is a requirement in the screening process. The last thing an agency wants is a person who is infected with a communicable disease interacting with the public.

A cop with a positive TB reaction has to be cleared before he/she can go back to work. This could entail 6 months of INH or more.

Positive Hep, same thing. You have to get a medical clearance.

You can't get a clearance for HIV-- It's terminal. Do you think a department wants to risk sending an officer out to possibly infect some one in the general public during an incident? Cop's bleed too. And sometimes we bleed on those we encounter.

The reasons are self evident.

No, they would exclude him because of the physical liability and risk that would be involved in police work. Your father will be involved with everything from working first aid at accidents to getting in fights and wrestling with other people. The possibility of fluid transfer would be very high. Also, you have to be in very good shape to be a police officer (contrary to all the fat ones that you see). Your dad my be in good shape right now, but when he gets sick, he wont be able to work. I could be wrong, but he should contact the Patrol and find out.

Doubtful. Liability and insurance concerns, I would guess.
Only one way to find out for sure.

Tell him to apply to the NYPD. They'll take him right in.
