Do some atheists decide to become atheist because they don't know which religion is right, so they just decide not to follow any at all?

No. Atheists don't need religion, and don't believe that any are right or wrong. That's the entire point. And becoming an atheist isn't really a conscious decision, I don't think. It's more of a process of learning, growing, reading, and testing the waters. It's like anything else in life, trial and error, and then one day, you simply "wake up."

Becoming an atheist is like waking up - there is NO decision necessary - you just wake up.

Do you 'decide' to wake up in the morning (or night)?
No; of course not.
You just wake up.

I'm one of the lucky ones cos I was never infected with the 'god virus' to start with BUT I did try really hard to become infected BUT evidence kept rearing its head - they wasn't any.
It seemed I was unable to become delusional ... maybe cos I'm sane and just maybe it's cos I have the courage to be responsible for my own Wins and Losses AND I don't need any imaginary beings to pretend to hold my hand.

I doubt that anyone "decides" to become an atheist, but they usually discover that they are.

Perhaps they were brought up in a religious household, and when they got old enough to start questioning what they were taught to believe, they discovered, that they didn't believe what they were told to believe. Perhaps they explored other beliefs systems and found them all wanting also.

Of course, the name calling, the accusation of being completely without morals, and all the other bad behavior on the part of religionists doesn't help.

Perhaps they were not brought up in another household, and when outsiders tried to tell them what they should believe, if just didn't make sense to them.

When did you decide to stop believing in the tooth fairy ?

I've never met an atheist including myself who 'decided' to become one. To a person every atheist I've ever personally met was an atheist before they even thought about the fact that they were one.

If someone claimed to be an atheist for the reason you listed I would probably tell them to just go pick one and believe and stop making atheists look stupid by claiming to be one.

Anyone who has no logical reason to be an atheist I call a future theist.

I think it hurts the theists' case that there are different religions presenting different points of views. It makes all of them seem to be man made theories used to explain where we came from, the purpose of life, and what happens after death. Any of us atheists will convert if any of the religions started presenting evidence to back up their claims.

"Athiest" was just the label that fit. It's like pulling a sock out of the drawer and saying "this one is blue." Or this gum is "grape." That's the best way I can describe it.

And yes like waking up. Exactly like the guy under me said.

I don't know about why others don't believe the God story. When I was small I read the Bible, Greek mythology and Norse mythology plus a good selection of Fairy Tales.
I never saw much difference between them except that the Bible was not nearly as well written as Grimm's

Atheists become atheists because at some point, we admit to ourselves we just don't think deities are real.

Personally I see them as metaphors and archetypes.

That's bound to be one of the reasons. The mere fact that there isn't one religion in the world kind of puts doubt into my mind for a start.

No. We are atheists because there is no evidence for the existence of any god. The presence of mindless religions is irrelevant.
