Hi- I have recently acquired a painting from an auction and I need help with anything you may know. It is circa 1860's or later and it is signed in red in the left corner. I can't make out what it is signed completely. I can definitely see the letter J. W--son. I can't tell what is between the W and the son it could either be one or two letters. The painting is of a woman whose face has dumbfounded every expert I have taken it to. They all said that they have never seen such attention to detail and such a gorgeous face. The painting is rather dreary looking but there isn't really a background, just black paint. It looks to be an oil painting, but I'm not sure because it is so fragile. Any help at all with this painting as to who could have painted it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

take a picture, ask your local art museum or gallery for help. there are sites that show autographs and signatures but you have to pay.

better yet, take a picture, upload it, paste in the link and see if anyone can help you.
