My college's Basketball coach said that if you take a hot shower or bath within "72" hours(he admitted he was unsure of the time) of getting sore muscles from a workout then it can cause an injury, or something bad. because of this, he reccomends cold showers until after that "72"(or whatever) time period. this sounds ridiculous to me, as my entire life i have taken a hot bath after a workout, or the next day when my muscles are sore, and i feel that it really helps relieve the pain. is there any merit in what he is claiming? thanks in advance

I usually hit the Sauna, then cold shower, then steam room, then cold shower then back into sauna. Keep this up for half an hour.

Hot shower or bath won't hurt if it's only sore muscles. If you have an injury that involves swelling or inflammation you should use ice ( 20 min. on, 20 min. off, 20 min. on and your done) twice a day for 2 or 3 days. Cold reduces the inflammation. After that heat is ok. But bear in mind that race horses get a cold shower after they race, and it seems to help their muscles. Cold is also good for shin splints.

As a skier of 30 yrs..when I was sore after carving the slopes. I would take a hot bath and dump 1 cup of epsom salt in there to relax and relieve sore muscles. Always has worked for me..Take care and happy soaking.
