My daughter has been quite depressed lately, over nothing in particular, its just like she cant seem to find the good in anything. Its been like this for a few months, she used to be full of live and very upbeat. Me and her are very close, and she confides in me about everything. I was wondering what do doctors look for when prescribing anti-depressants to teens? I don't know much about them, but I was thinking they might be something good to look into, because being depressed is affecting her health. She isn't eating much anymore, and her grades are going down in school.
Can anyone please tell me what makes for a good anti-depressant candidate?
Thank you

I am suffering with depression for the last 5 yrs but it is under control. Loss of general interest in activities, loss of appetite, loss of energy, withdrawl from people, aches and pains unexplained for no medical reason, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and suicide, suicidal thoughts(the world would be better off without me!) type thinking..two or more of these symptoms that continue for two or more weeks are signs you daughter could be suffering from depression and needs some professional help and possibly medication to help her to feel better. I KNOW I have experienced all of these at one time or another..my big one was feeling like I was "in a BLACK hole" that I couldn't climb out of. Good luck to you and I hope I was able to give you some insight on this.

Why not start with the school counselor? They are often helpful and informative.
She does have some signs of depression. There can also be other causes.
I'd suggest make an appointment with your family doctor for her for a check up. Often there are medical reasons for how she is behaving. It's not always psychological. The doctor should check her over and draw some blood for lab work.
FYI rarely do daughters talk with their mothers about absolutely everything!! Mothers often think that is the case. Everyone needs some private thoughts they can keep to them self.

Anti-depressants are very particular - some of them work very well with a certain person and not at all for a different person. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to use a certain medication because they had a good experience with it, because it's likely your daughter won't have the same experience. Your best bet is to see a psychiatrist and see what they have to say. You might do a little research on the common antidepressants: Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Wellbutrin, etc. beforehand. And if she starts taking antidepressants, please remember to keep a careful eye on her. Some antidepressants backfire and make a person more depressed, which can lead to suicide.

Depression is very common in teens and can be dangerous.
They feel worthless and dislike and so much more, their hormones are going crazy and it is all so much for them.'
I am familiar with suicide and teens are one of the highest on the list. I would suggest she see the Dr., even if see needs meds. and also maybe a counselor to get her through her
depressed times. She probably will get better as she gets older. They may have to try different antidepressants. Tell them you don't want one to make her groggy or sleepy, watch for signs of anything bad while she is on them.==
