Taser...they are miserable. Unless you are on something, you can't fight it. You are helpless which makes it a lot easier for someone to get your sidearm.

A stick, ie a bo staff easy to use with little training and very effective as long as you can reach the person attacting you.
But if you can reach them they are much too close. If you miss you lose, so why limit yourself a shotgun is easy to use, very deadly, excellent at short range, and each pellet of shot is less likely to penetrate walls and hit bystanders, and is much more effective then anything else you can hold or throw.
If I wanted to attact you and you had a shotgun, trust me I'd be the one running.
