Yes you can die in your dreams, while it is rare.
Note: The meanings are based on how you feel in your dream, not just the dying itself.
Die
To dream that you die in your dream, symbolizes inner changes, transformation, self-discovery and positive development that is happening within you or in your life. Although such a dreams may bring about feelings of fear and anxiety, it is no cause for alarm and is often considered a positive symbol. Dreams of experiencing your own death usually means that big changes are ahead for you. You are moving on to new beginnings and leaving the past behind. These changes does not necessarily imply a negative turn of events. Metaphorically, dying can be seen as an end or a termination to your old ways and habits. So, dying does not always mean a physical death, but an ending of something.
On a negative note, to dream that you die may represent involvement in deeply painful relationships or unhealthy, destructive behaviors. You may feeling depressed or feel strangled by a situation or person in your waking life. Perhaps your mind is preoccupied with someone who is terminally ill or dying. Alternatively, you may be trying to get out of some obligation, responsibility or other situation.

It's not unusual for people to have dreams that they have died, and still wake up the next morning, I have dreamed of being dead before, and am still here to tell about it. That said, if someone died in their dreams, and then physically died before waking, they aren't around to tell us about it, so I don't know how we could possibly know an exact answer to that........ I wonder where the notion that you will die for real if you fall from a high place and hit the ground before you wake came from, if such a thing ever happened, then the person it happened to didn't survive to tell about it, so how would others know that was what happened? If it ever happens to me, maybe I will try to find a way to come back and tell you so, but I think it's likely I will have other things on my mind by then :)

Well I say you can D=
I'm sure I've died in my dreams a couple of times, and been able to feel pain, for that matter.

Nope. I did last night. I hydroplaned off the road when I hit a wetspot, and ended up on the ground. I got stuck to the ground. I couldn't move, it was very real to the point I REALLY thought I was dead. Things like smelling the rain and the trees just made me think it is real. I kept trying to move. Then I figured out I was dreaming and woke up. You can't really die like it happens in your dreams of course.

I am usually aware that I'm dreaming but I've died sometimes or am not even in the dream so don't worry about it.

I've heard that before (and not just in 1408, my sister told me that when I was little). I have never died in my dreams, so I've always wondered if it's true.

Well there an' to many people out here who died and then woke up again to complained about there experience and then went back to the dead again.
Maybe you go by a grave site as a dead person to wake up and tell his version of the story.

If you mean the actual dream itself then no. I've been killed in the dream before.

I have experienced two kinds of deaths in a dream. The death where you just "wake up". And the death where you don´t wake up. Sadly, you can die while dreaming. It happens to us who have lived through a traumatic event. It´s called "Sleep Paralysis". You can die yet wake up but some part of your brain keeps on sleeping. So you are awake and sleeping. The horrors you can go through while in sleep paralysis is extreme. You can be brutally murdered. Stabbed. Drowned. Car crashes and so on... The worst of it is, you "feel it all".
