Advent is upon us !! Praised be our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ !!

Christ gave us the great Sacrament of Reconciliation. Are we availing ourselves of this before Christmas comes?

John 20:19–23 "On the evening of that day.. ..Jesus said to [the apostles] again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you... ..If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

This is the authority to forgive sins in the name of Christ, given to the apostles. This authority was handed down through Apostolic Succession. Notice how in verse 21 Jesus says, "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." In other words, Jesus is giving his apostles the same authority that he received from his Father. Now what authority did Jesus receive from God the Father? We see earlier, in Mark 2:10, that he had the authority to forgive sins. Jesus brought the power of forgiveness, and in John 20:21, he gives that authority to his apostles

I'm going in a couple of hours. When I pray before the Tabernacle, which contains the Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ, I shall remember to include you all in my prayers.

Merry Christmas and Blessed Advent to all !!

I've never understoon why a third party needs to be part of the confession - I feel confessing sins directly to God brings about more honesty - do you think the scripture you have stated means that sins confessed directly to the Lord during prayer are not forgiven? There is no offense meant in this question, please don't take it that way.

Why do you have to have a priest hear and forgive your sins when you can speak directly to God?
