Initially, it was spoken in Italy, then the ancient Roman Republic and then the Roman Empire. But through the early middle ages, Latin was the language of "official" documents and intellectual writings throughout Europe. People spoke their various vernacular languages, but the relatively few literate people read and wrote in Latin. It was only gradually that vernacular literatures began. ( Dante stirred up a storm of criticism when he wrote the Inferno in Italian instead of Latin. He ended up publishing an essay defending his choice of language. Ironically, he decided to write that defense in Latin!)
Relatively modern scholars like Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton wrote in Latin as well. By then its usage was dying out of course, but for several centuries Latin was truly an international language in Europe.

Latin was the high language of Rome and most of what would come to be Italy before the vernacular (Italian) language became more widely used.

Warrior pooflinger, I would disagree. Latin is not dead, it's shaped most of the languages that we speak, which we still speak today. It survives but in a different form.
Anywhoozle, I found this for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language
It should give you the information that you desire for your question :) Hope that helps!
