were most of these tapes filmed with no sound, and the sound was just edited in by the people at these television stations?

I think in some cases it is, but not all. I just purchased the World at War series (WW2 documentary) and the producers admitted to doing that at times, but not all the time. By the way, I highly recommend this series if you have not seen it already.

I've seen much of that footage myself. The sound in the majority of the footage especially the combat stuff is added on later to make the footage more interesting and realistic to the civilians who were expected to watch the newsreels in the local theaters. Front line combat cameramen didn't have any sound equipment. At that point in history there was no reliable portable equipment that could be easily carried and used by one or two men. Hope that helps.
