I think you're being sarcastic, since "gay" means "happy." That's why homosexuals chose it to describe themselves, actually. Because they're happy being who they are.

Words change through the course of time. The word gay in the 20's meant 'happy or fun loving'. In that sense the song relates a fun and festive apparel. If you want to change it have at it. That is the truth of the song.
Knowing just that one point should alert you to other words that are not used any longer or the meanings have been altered.

That song predates Political Correctness. This is one big reason I don't like homo's using the word 'gay'. I don't see a bunch of whistle blowing, shouting, angry protesters as happy. Where do they get off calling themselves 'gay'???
