Of course I wish. :)

I used to go back and forth on that issue in the beginning quite a bit. I think I can relate to where you are at. It IS hard to think there may not be a heaven or an afterlife. Coming to terms with the notion of death - as it is - just plain death... is quite a bit like dealing with the death of an actual person. It's so emotionally difficult. Some atheists breeze through it, it took me months... more like years honestly... to really get comfortable with the idea.

But take your time with it. In the end I found I appreciated life more and treated those around me with a LOT more respect and kindness. I also truly value the time I spend with them now. Hopefully your search will lead you in a similar direction, even if you don't reach the same conclusions I did.

Here are some good articles on the subject. You don't have to agree with them but they're food for thought:

These are GOOD articles in general. There's a little blip about the afterlife: http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/paul_obrien/gentle/

There are people who believe this. We believe in reincarnation. We will not return in the exact same life (we have already learned what we needed to learn in this life or we wouldn't have passed). But we will reincarnate into a new life and keep doing so until we learn all the lessons of life and become fully enlightened. At that time, we can choose to become a teacher for those still in a physical form, we can choose to stay with the God and Goddess.

"Melancholy", We all wish that there truly WAS something else after Death, but, Sorry, Girl, it just isn't happening.
My beloved wife of 25 years & I had an agreement: Whoever went first would "get word back", somehow, to the other...
My wife was highly-trained at all fighting/survival skills, more intelligent than even Myself, and the spiritually (Inner Strength, NOT Religious) strongest woman I've ever known.
That was nearly ten years ago. Still NO word nor sign.
CONCLUSION:
There is NO "Afterlife", NO "Heaven" nor "Hell". Nothing.
I'm from Vegas, and I bet MY life & "soul" on THAT.
Sorry.

In Zen Buddhism, it is not necessary to believe or disbelieve in an afterlife. Belief in reincarnation is optional, and once you understand the illiusory nature of this world, much less appealing, except for those who choose to return in order to help others.

No. I came to acceptance of death years ago. Everything that begins must end and everything that lives must die. Its not a bad thing. Its what allows us to grow and become more. Now I don't look forward to it, and I don't want to die, but death is simply natural and normal. Its unavoidable so why make up stupid stories about it just because I'm too weak to handle it? Death is death. Its just the way things are.

I certainly do. Death is scary. It seems rather natural to find the prospect of nothingness virtually impossible to deal with. In a way, the only thing that seems fair is if the universe revolves around me, somehow.

All living things on earth have the same destiny - - - plant or animal . We come , we reproduce , we die .
We will be in the distant future exactly what we were before birth .

Live your life for the today and the now. If you don't have to bother yourself with planning for another life after you die, you can enjoy this one much more!

Wishful thinking does not become reality. I would much prefer to live in reality.
