I'm very excited that my yorkie-poo is going to give birth in about ten days, but i'm also a little worried. I just need some general tips about how they behave around the time that they give birth and things I can do to help her stay calm and make sure all goes well. What can i do to ensure that the puppies survive and what are signs that the puppies are sick or dying? I just want to get some information before she gives birth so i'll be prepared. Also, are their any good websites out there that can give me some information? Thanks for your help!

Please don't call my dog a mutt. And it really doesn't concern me if you think breeding dogs is a horrible thing. Actually, I just did a huge fundraiser at my school to support the local animal shelter, and I even got the father neutered after my dog got pregnant. So think before you say rude things.

Alittle late to shut the barn door folks. Geesh.

Do you have her whelping box set up? She should be sleeping in it now to be sure she'll feel comfortable having and keeping her pups in it.

You can track her temp to know when she'll go into labor within 12 hrs. Look that up online.

When she starts labor, she may dig at the newspapers you have lining the whelping box. She may also look at her rear end in absolute confusion. She will be panting. If you put your hand on her tummy you can feel the contractions roll through.

If she goes longer than 2 hours of hard labor with no sign of a pup, she's in trouble, run, don't walk to the nearest Vet, no matter the hour!

If she isn't willing to cut the umbilical cords and clean the pups herself, you need to be willing and able to do so. I tend to keep a smaller box near by, with a heating pad on low setting wrapped in a towel, to put the pups in, so they are out of the way while she is still whelping. You can put them back in with her inbetween births, as you'll be able to see when labor intensifies again for the next birth, but it's best to have them out while she is birthing the next pup so they don't get stepped on.

You need to keep watch and make sure her milk comes in, and that everybody is getting fed. It can take a couple hours for her milk to come in.

You need to weigh the pups everyday to be sure they are gaining weight, a pup that doesn't gain wait daily that first 2 wks is in trouble! Any pups that are cold, are in trouble!

Any pups she kicks out of the box are in trouble!

Start running a search online, you should have already done this, for whelping instructions. There are plenty of good outlines out there on how this is done.

It isn't that difficult, provided you stay calm. You're main job is to keep her calm. I used to sit and hold her little paw and rub her tummy thru the contractions, and whisper soothing words. But that's just me, and my girls were extremely pampered.

Some dogs don't want you that close, and if that's the case, that's ok too. Just be nearby and keep watch.

Also a notebook works great. Record the time of each birth, gender, and weight. That way you know when it's been too long, and you have a starting weight. A little bit of ribbon tied carefully around the neck, not to loose, not too tight, works great for marking pups to keep track of who's who and how each pup is doing.

A pup should double it's weight with in the first 2 wks, I'm pretty certain, look it up to be sure, it's been about 4 yrs since I've done this.

Cross your fingers, and good luck.

Oh, be sure to have plenty of paper towels, and a good book to read, as you'll have alot of time in between the pups births, but you still need to be close by.

Look online for a list of whelping supplies that you need to have handy and make sure you have everything on the list.

Off the top of my head:

Lots of paper towels, and newspapers. For changing out the icky papers in the box, and cleaning up the pups.

Styptic powder, in case you get a cord that wno't stop bleeding.

Dull scissors, incase you have to cut the cord yourself

Unwaxed, unflavored dental floss to tie off the cords if you cut them yourself.

A digital scale small enough to weigh the pups.

Paper and pencil to record time gender and weight of each pups at birth

heating pad wrapped in a towel in a small box to keep the pups in while she's having the next one.

Number for local ER Vet for just incase.

and I'm sure there is stuff I've forgotten, start searching online for a more complete list.

Oh and have a can of formula and an eyedropper to feed it with, just incase her milk doesn't come in, better safe than sorry.

Good luck!

Edit: I choose to educate rather than rant, and for that I get thumbs down. Gee how I love this community we have here! rofl. Y'all crack me up!

You need to spay her.

General whelping Tips: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/giving_birth_to_puppies.html

I work for rescue groups and I have a couple questions for you to help me educate people better. Could you help me?

1. As a BYB, why do you feel the AKC, PCA, and YTCA rules do not apply to you?
a. You are above ethics
b. You aren't part of the overpopulation problem
c. No one should tell you what to do
d. Another reason (please specify)
e. You feel that any dog should be bred
f. You didn't know you were a BYB and that the AKC, PCA, and YTCA rules prohibit this type of breeding.

2. As a BYB, why do you think that it's ok to breed pet quality mutts recklessly when 10000 animals a day die in shelters?
a. You don't care about those dogs
b. You just want to make money
c. You don't care about your dogs
d. Another reason (please specify)

3. Lots of people don't want spay/neuter laws - instead, they want education. But, from what I've seen on here, when you try to educate BYBs, they just swear and scream and ignore you, no matter how Nice or Mean you are. So, what would it take for you to stop breeding irresponsibly?
a. Your dogs die
b. You create legless dogs like these: http://www.nsalamerica.org/campaigns/chihuahuas/
c. You get sued for selling poor quality animals
d. The Poodle Club and Yorkie Club ask you to stop breeding
e. The AKC asks you to stop breeding
f. Another option (please specify)

Thanks for your help.

will everybody stop calling her a back yard breeder and her dog a mutt. like settle down and get a grip. she is obviously trying to ensure the dogs are going to be safe, and not everyone in this world wants a pure bred dog and will never take a mixed breed. I'm sure she has a plan on what shes doing with the puppies because thats not in her question. Sorry hun i'm not a breeder, I'm not sure what to tell you but I saw a few good answers on here that will tell you.

Have fun with your pups!

Please get her spayed as soon as possible. Go visit your local animal shelter to get the real feeling of all those dogs there that don't have homes.
And because your dog is a mixture of 2 breeds, it is a "mutt." It's not a bad word, just the definition.

sure. as long as she's feeding them. She in simple terms needs on my own time, as a results of fact even canines agree that toddlers could be demanding and not hassle-free artwork! it extremely is in contrast to she will call a nanny and make a journey to the spa. The doggies will cry out in the event that they want her. she will hear and he or she'll circulate lower back to them. it incredibly is common. do not subject.

Sounds like you don't need us to tell you how wrong you are. You already know. You know you are breeding mutts & contributing to the over population.

What I don't understand is, if you knew it was wrong why did you do it despite what you knew? Bad choice, huh?

Hope you don't go to the pound someday & find one or more of your babies there waiting to be killed.

It took a lot of guts to post this question, knowing what a wrong you did.

I'm sure you won't do it again.

By now you know you are one of those horrid BACK YARD BREEDERS.

Here's a few tips:

-YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BRED YOUR MUTT
-You shouldn't be breeding mutts
-And if you don't already know the answers to your questions, you have NO BUSINESS BREEDING.

If you aren't smart enough to know that you should be asking a Vet this stuff, then you absolutely should not be breeding.

Congratulations on creating more mixed-breed puppies! You're stealing homes from puppies in shelters who have to DIE because no one wants them...have fun with that!
