the second is worse. The first is a person giving up on themselves, which although very sad, not as tragic as the last. The second is a person giving up on someone else, which is tragic. When the person has already giving up on themselves then it appears everyone else is giving up on you as well, there isnt much hope.
When someone gives up on themselves, I would like to think there is someone there to help pick them up, or at least I hope there would be for me.
