I believe they were Zoasterians, which was the biggest religioin in the world at the time, and very influenced by Astronomy and Science.
They are still being murdered and persecuted by Islamists to this day, just as Christians and nature worship religions are being persecuted and murdered in countries like Sudan, Chad and elsewhere (by Muslims - big surprise).
