I once read that the date on which more Americans commit suicide than on any other is January 2nd. Is that true, and where can I verify that (i.e., what source, etc)? Thanx and have a nice day!

i heard that the day on which most people commit suicide is on christmas. Its the time when every one is happy and with their family but if your not with your family and your alone then your depressed which causes then to become suicidal.
but if you look it up on google then im sure you'll get real results.

I believe it. No one wants to commit suicide Jan. 1st cause most people went out partying and sort of sleep in, and whatever. January 2nd is peoples first day back to work/school and the such. and people prefer to do it at the very beginning of a year because it feels like you just finished a year, and the world can start fresh without you.
i was surprised when i first saw that date.. i had actually been planning something for that day but since changed my mind.
so yeah, it definitely makes total sense to me for planned suicides to happen on that day. irrational suicides though, i don't think. those could happen sporadically throughout the year.

hello, well i'm not exactly sure if this is the answer but i do know that people who have lost a loved one get very depressed on & around the Christmas holiday. i know that i'm a little depressed this christmas cuz i just lost my brother this summer & my aunt also but i'm not suicidal. but i can relate to people who do get depressed. also i have a younger son that lives far away from me & i sure do miss him alot & wish that we could be together for the holidays but i'm intouch with him most of the time. so there's a few answers for ya! have a great christmas & happy new years too! nobrethequeen

Could be, considering the holidays can be depressing and upsetting for so many.
This is precisely why we need to be aware of others and include them in things and check on those who would be most vulnerable to this; people grieving a death, divorce, other relationship problem, job loss, or lonely.

have no idea if that is true but i guess the holidays can be very lonely for some people. its quite sad for someone to take their own life because they feel a sense of hopelessness. if people talked to each other more, the world would be a nicer place.

Who cares? Do you want to join the Lemming crowd? No source has such data. What about people who get killed by cops? Which were earnest attempts to survive by killing cops, and fleeing, and which were 'suicide by cops' deals where the guy attacked police to get them to kill him because he wanted to die, nd lacked the guts to shoot himself? How many swimming/boating 'accidents' were actually intentional self drownings? No one knows. Since you can't even know which deaths are suicides, and which are not, there is no way to know on what day most suicides occur.

i dont know if its true but if it is it could be that another year has passed and people make the same resolutions every year but never stick to them and the ones that commit suicide may think their lives will never change which is sad because God gives us free will and gives us our choices he may lay out our paths but we are left to decide if we want to follow it or not and most decide to stray

suicide is not as picking a date.when you are suicidal there is no date.you don't think and you just do it.i no cause it happen to me.but now i thank God he let me live,cause i wouldn't be here to tell you.today could be a bad day,but tomorrow may bring a great sunshine and i am 50 year young woman.always think positive.

you might try looking it up on Dateline or 20-20 websites, i'm sure i've seen it somewhere.
Also said that more pople die during the holiday season than any other time.

I always heard it was during Christmas (people without families).
January second is probably when people realise they didn't lose all their fat after one day of going to the gym!
