To minimise the amount of times you have to correspond to the tax office I would advise the following, based on a claim for the 2007-2008 tax year (06 April 2007 to 05 April 2008):

1) Detail periods of employment, taxable benefits and periods of no income via a letter or P91 form from 06 April 2007 to date you leave country.

2) If possible provide copies of all P45s and evidence of benefits received

3) Complete P85 Leaving the UK form and submit with original P45 parts 2 & 3.

4) Submit whole package, with your current address, mobile number and National Insurance Number to tax office that dealt with the latest employment.

As above cheque would be issued unless you have provided account details on P85.

If you supply the above then only problems that could arise are if previous tax years have not been reviewed or you have further details in your tax code to review.

Good luck

The tax year is from April, so after April contact the tax office to claim back tax overpaid for year 07/08

Other answers are shamefully inaccurate. You need to go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and download a form P85. Complete this and send it to your tax office with the P45 you should have received on leaving your job. Repayment will come to you via a cheque or direct to your bank account.

you can only claim tax back if youve paid some. im not sure how long you have to claim it but you should start by contacting your local Inland Revenue office -look in the phone book- they will tell you exactly what to do
