Calm down and call animal control, the shelters and any humane societies listed in your phone book. Tell all of them you're missing a cat, ask if they have had it brought in.
I recommend you going down to them all twice a week as well, as their records aren't always up to date and some of the places only hold an animal 3-5 days before euthenizing if nobody comes to claim them.
Post a notice at the closest 5 grocery stores and the closest 3 vet clinics, also at any pet supply stores in your area.
This is the bare minimum of what I'd do--if you don't do that, you stand a chance of not getting the cat back if someone picked it up and took it somewhere as a stray. Also notify the neighbors on your street--you can put a notice in their mailbox or stuck on their doors.

You might not want to hear this in time of your loss, but this is a reality for cat owners and I am talking from experience since I am a cat owner myself.
If your cat escapes, and does not return same or next day, check the roadways down the block or nearby streets and sidewalk since cats who escape tend to roam at night and really close to the road and a high percentage of getting hit by a car. Unfortunately, one of my cats was tragically hit by a car and someone moved him onto the sidewalk. When I went out searching for him, I found him dead on a sidewalk. Another thing you should know, is when a cat is sick, it will hide somewhere for 1-3 days and will return, but in a fragile state. So check streets and have a vet ready in case your cat returns looking ill.

All you can do is to keep checking with shelters and vets. Put posters up around the nieghborhood and ask anyone around the area if they have seen the cat, especially families with children. Tell your friend to keep hope, my cat was missing for two weeks, and then turned up at the local shelter!

As many here have said, put up fliers, ask the neighbors, keep calling the shelter, and don't despair. She might be in someone's garage or under a porch or in an outbuilding, so you might ask neighbors to listen out for a meow.

Go door to door.
Call city or whoever p.u. road kills,.. it's the NOT knowing that's the worse.
Call schools and ask principals to put on p.a. systems, kids walking back and forth fr. school may see or know something.
Call radio stations to broadcast with a reward.
Hope this helps.
