In my cynical mind, I think part of it may be an additional advertising scheme.

(Similar to how Apple computers gives schools a *huge* discount when they outfit their school with Apple computers, so the children grow up knowing how to use an Apple, and be more apt to buy their brand later in life.)

ADD:

Ingredients of Pedigree adult:
Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, animal fat (preserved with bha/bht), wheat mill run, natural poultry flavor, rice, salt, potassium chloride, caramel color, wheat flour, wheat gluten, vegetable oil, vitamins (choline chloride, dl-alpha tocopherol acetate [source of vitamin e], l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [source of vitamin c*], vitamin a supplement, thiamine mononitrate [vitamin b1], biotin, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement [vitamin b2], vitamin d3 supplement, vitamin b12 supplement), trace minerals (zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide).

Translation of the ingredients:
fillers, low-quality/high-allergy grains, mystery meats, leftover parts, cheap ingredients, carcinogenic preservatives (bha & bht), etc.

Overall: YUCK. One of the worst foods on the market.

They sponsor these shelters and adoption programs as part of their marketing plan.

#1: When you see Pedigree's name splashed on the walls of the shelter or adoption events, it's done to make people associate Pedigree with something positive (the adoption program), which makes people feel good about Pedigree, which in turn makes some of those people trust the Pedigree name.

#2: When Pedigree provides money/food to shelters, what do you think the shelter will recommend to people who adopt their dogs?

#3: The more you see a product's name, especially in such a "feel good" environment such as in your question, the more likely you may be to try the product or change your negative feelings about the product to positive. Think of all the people on this site that feed Canidae food...why do you think they do it? Because they see the name over and over, they hear good things about it, and over a period of time, they come to trust it and believe in it. ***I am NOT implying there is ANY comparison between Pedigree and Canidae...Pedigree is CRAP, Canidae is NOT, so don't freak out on me!*** It's just a matter of marketing, and trying to subconciously plant their name in your head. These huge corporations that produce foods like Pedigree really don't care about dogs, or adoptions, they care about profits...and they know this is a good way to sell product to unsuspecting people.

I wouldn't buy their dry food, but the cans of meat and gravy, I figure how can that be screwed up? I'm glad when companies support shelters and adoptions, it gets awareness out there.

Companies are always open to customers thoughts and suggestions for improvment. Maybe you should send them your comments so they can work on improvment. Either way since shelters are so overwhelmed with pets needing homes I just gratefull to see a company who cares enough to give freely to save a life or two.

They try to convine us to buy their food. My dog eats Canidae lamb and rice formula. It's very cheap. I'm feeding a 30lb dog and 5 pounds goes a long way. It's only 7.99 for 5lbs so thats great.

$$$$$$$$$$

Technically, the food meets all the standards put out there for pet food, so, they do the bare minimum to maintain those standards.

They may support these causes because they really believe in them, or it may just be to have their name on a bunch of stuff that animal lovers will see (advertising).

What does one have to do with the other? And the food is actually high-quality,maybe one of your pets just didn't have a good experience with it?Doesn't make it bad food.
