Wear your shoes. The fact that you have specially selected an outfit means that this person is not your BEST friend. Formal is formal. Wear your shoes. Appropriate shoes for the occasion.

Should the environment become more relaxed, you are welcome to take them off to demonstrate your comfort to your guest, However, taking your shoes off gives this person (that you barely know) permission to be comfortable and take their shoes off as well. Not just take their shoes off but you will have allowed them to be comfortable....which can mean different things to different people.

You don't. They are your guests. If this concerns you so, then you make other provisions for the care of your floor. You provide either slippers (like those disposable ones) or better yet, those disposable shoe COVERS for your guests. If they are REGULAR friends, buy them special slippers JUST for them when they visit. You may still ask if they could remove their shoes, but you will have an alternative if they choose not to. THAT is the polite thing to do! Have a polite day. Etiquette takes over where laws end.

I don't do anything formal in my house because of this exact thing!

Unless you or someone in your family is getting married, having a baptism, bris or bar/bat mitvah...You know what I mean...a formal EVENT, I think you should be able to wear (or not) whatever you want.

If you are meeting in your house, preparing to go somewhere, then yeah, wear the shoes. Make sure you have a pedi or at least clean/trim up your feet/toes before the event. Or wear dark socks.

There are those who see the shoes off and ask if it is OK for them to do it (like me)...don't be surprised. Just let him/her know it is his/her choice, not a house rule.

I live in an arab country where people are really into formal guests and dressing up for them bla bla....

We don't wear shoes when guests come, and we DEFINITLY do not wear nothing on our feet when guests come. We wear some kind of nice clog things to match whatever your wearing, and in the summertime a nice pair of thongs (the flip flop kinds not the underwear haha).

So, you should have some kind of sllip on foot wear for when you want to look good inside your home. Hope that helps!

Leave your shoes off and answer the door in your socks. Your guest might join you in going shoeless.

It is your house, so you get to set the rules. If you prfer to go barefoot in your house, that is perfectly acceptable.

Just be sure that your feet are clean and that the floors have been swept/vaccumed so atht your guest will not see you with dirty feet.

As long as the feet are clean, there in no problem. Your house=your rules.

It depends on who the guest is . . . a boss or superior, yes wear shoes. If it is a peer, just wearing your socks would probably put them at ease.

I would wear shoes out of respect for my guest. If you were a nudist and normally didn't wear clothes in your home, wouldn't you still be polite and put some on for company?
