Neither. We do good works because Christ's spirit is in us.

The idea is not that we are condemned by good works, but that through a committed Christian lifestyle, and faith in Christ, the good works will freely flow as an expression of our likeness to the sacrifice Christ made for us.

The Bible teaches that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Works of any kind will not bring salvation. Christians do good works after salvation because of who we are, not to become something or someone. Works done in the flesh by unregenerated people are worthless to God. God will not judge the works of believers for salvation, only for rewards. The unbeliever will have all their works judged, "good" and bad. If there is one unforgiven sin present, it is enough for eternal punishment. God's holiness will not allow sin into Heaven, His righteousness demands payment for sin, which is eternal punishment, also known as the "second death".

After hanging around R&S for the last year, I'm starting to think that fundamentalists (love your version, BTW) believe that only those who agree with them are saved. Anyone who doesn't share their viewpoint is a candidate for a one-way trip down a long greased tube to Hades.

Neither.
I, as a Bible fundamentalist, believe in salvation by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, with good works to follow.
The good works are the sign of the change within and have no effect on salvation itself.

BECAUSE, By the deeds of the law there shall no person be justified in God’s sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin and all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:20, 23
THEN, They all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:12 Also I say unto you, whosoever shall confess me (Jesus) before men, him shall the Son of man (Jesus) also confess before the angels of God: But he that denies me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. Luke 12:8-9
HOWEVER, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
FOR, Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me. John 14:6
THEREFORE, If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. Romans 10:9
THEN, He that overcomes, the same shall be clothed in white robes; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Revelation 3:5
SO, That whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:15

To do good works is a good thing, but to believe one is saved by works is foolishness. We are saved by Grace through faith and we are too do good works for they have been prepared for us to do.

Eph 2:10
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

David,
James 2 is the reference and one can not be "Saved or Lost" by works alone. Have a great weekend.

We are saved by faith+works.

James 2:18-Yea a man say I have faith, and you have works; show me your faith without works, and I'll show you my faith by my works.
