I am look to buy a handgun for a collector and need some help. The person has over 100 rifles so I think going with a handgun is best since its more likely he will not have it. I want to spend under 900.00 USD and need to be able to get it today so nothing to hard to find. I have asked at the gun shop he goes to but still wanted advice from others.

It is for my father so the legal thing is not an issue.

a Ruger Super Redhawk DA revolver
or any older ruger revolver they have at the shop you are going to also would suggest any older smith and wesson
revolver might even add the new copy of gun trader's guide
the safe mentioned earlier was a good idea also remember it is against the law to purchase a firearm for someone else

Believe it or not $900 will not get you a whole lot now or days as far as collector handguns are concerned. Fifteen years ago you could have purchased a WWI 1911 .45ACP in good condition for that price or two(!) 1911-A1 .45ACP pistols (non-matching parts) for $900 (before taxes). You might want to find out what gun accessories this individual does not have and always wanted. If he does not have a cartridge board ( a wall hanging with all different kinds of rifle/pistol shells hanging on it) this might be a good idea. It is a little late in the season (if you are looking at Christmas) to be looking for this type of thing.

Any Colt is likely to become collectible. I've seen like 1911s in .38 Super (rarer chambering than the standard .45 acp) for about that amount US dollars. Any collector would appreciate a Colt.

Good luck.

100 rifles? Darn, I still have a few more to buy then......

As a collector myself, I can tell you it would be very hard for someone not knowledgeable about my taste to buy me a gun that would be "just right". See, part of the fun of collecting is the hunt for what you buy, own and collect.

Also, you do have some legal concerns to consider. It's not legal to buy a firearm for someone else, even as a gift. This is a law that prevents ex convicts from having a friend or relative buy them a gun, etc. etc.

So actually buying a gun for them yourself may not be the best plan.

Consider a Gift Certificate.....that way they can have all the fun of searching for their next aquisition.

OR.........with a collection so large, I can tell you from experience that a new Gun Safe will likely be very much needed and wanted. I could actually use a couple of safes, as the ones I have are jam-packed.

Can you tell us what the gun shop offered you? Very curious about that.......

A true collector would say " I never met a gun I didn't like".

I really love the feel of my brother's Colt 1911. It is one of the few firearms that seems to be a part of military and U.S. history from the last century. You can just imagine Douglas MacArthur wading through the surf with this big hunk of America metal on his hip. The 1911 was not prized for accuracy as you could not hit a bale of hay 20 feet away, but because if you did hit an adversary you were going to remove a big chunk of flesh before your next bullet cut off a limb.

Unless you have a collectors license or a dealers license you will not be able to get it today! You may be able to purchase it today but there is a federally mandated waiting period for the average consumer....it's called a cooling off period! That is if you are not buying it from an individual.

Why the rush to buy a gun, pal? I think the rose is an excellent idea, or a gift card would be much more practical.
