,A temple will have a sanctified atmosphere , the moment you enter its precincts you get divine vibrations , your mind turns towards God, this is the reason, we provide such atmosphere by earmarking separately a pooja room. For highly evolved soul it does not matter whether it home or temple.

At home there may be few and all may not join or join at the same time for worship where as in temple there are many and all have come to worship and together they do so;there will be a multiplying effect in temple; devotional vibrations are likely to be more in temple than home.

Confusius: the path to wisdom can come from 3 different routes
1. learning which is easiest
2. reflection which is the most noble
3. experience which is the bitterest
seems to me worshipping at home limits you to 2&3, while going to a temple gives you 1-3. Why limit yourself?

I think Spirit loves you no matter where you worship, but I wonder...there are so many faiths that believe in the spiritual power of people gathered together, almost like a physical power that can change the world. I like that idea.

Worshiping at home is a cop out for going to Church.
Temple worship is allot deeper, you walk and talk with God.

It does not matter to God, for that it does matter to God weather you worship or not.
You worship, pray, puja the idoi, photograph, empty hall, fire, or cross for calming your mind. Only calm mind can work for GOD.
Kabir
" let no one go searching for Him,
still your mind, meditate on Him,
for He, Ram, fills each particle of the creation".

Depends on the individual. If one feel inspired in collective activity then that is their way. It is not required in Hinduism to do any thing by hard and fast rules.
