The Nutcracker is a ballet. It is all dance and music. There are human voices used in one piece of it but they are just "ahh" and they are background vocals done by a group of singers. No soloists.

There is no "singing" as such. There is a chorus of voices - if I'm not mistaken - that is made up of women voices only(not positive about women only).
This ensemble is employed by Tschaikowsky, just as if it were another section of the orchestra. Only "aaahhhh--s" or "oooohhhh--s" are vocalized: no poetry or prose, "words" of any kind.. And sopranos are most definitely members of this chorus.

The Nutcraker is a ballet protraying a story. There is no singing, and believe me, I was upset when I heard that. But it has wonderful music that, as a child, was enough to make me want to be a ballerina.
