If you have been invited t a holiday party and you've been asked to bring something (a plate of cookies etc.) should you still bring a hostess gift?

in my family we never visit anyone with mani vuote (empty hands in italian) the cookies are pot luck contribution... a hostess gift is just that a gift

It is always considered polite to bring a gift for the host or hostess, bottle of wine an ornament or some small token of appreciation. So yes, even if you are bringing a dish bring something for the person throwing the gathering. Enjoy and good luck

No. Hostess gifts are reserved for parties where the hostess is preparing and serving the food at her own expense. The hostess gift is supposed to be a token of appreciation for all that she has done to provide a good meal. This is a potluck type thing, so no gift is necessary, and in my opinion bringing one would be tacky and also inconsiderate to the other guests who will not be bringing one.

You don't have to bring a gift, but it never hurts to go the extra mile. Just make sure when you greet the hostess, you specify, "this is just for you."

I would also bring along a bottle of wine for the hostess.
