Some people do, yes. But certainly not all, and in my opinion, it's a small minority that joins just for a sense of belonging.

Excellent reasoning.
Yes it's possible. The sense of belonging is a social need.

Although not every people that follow a certain religion or belief will do it for this reason, some of them will definitely find in a cult that sense of belonging to a certain group that they were looking for (weather consciously or not).
Plus in some cases there are believes that are seen wrong for most people so I guess the followers would feel backed up for their group.

I believe that those who attend religious services do it for two reasons. They sincerely want to do what is right and they want to be accepted by society. These two things are very close to the same thing. But the feeling of belonging to a ''special'' group to which ''god'' reveals wisdom and provides special care is the reason they stay or continue. The truth ceases to matter when it is so easy to feel so good and so secure about ones life and ones place in society.
Self rightousness is a very powerful drug.

Sure it is. Christianity is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It does not require anyone but you and God. He does advise that you fellowship with other Christians but only for guidance and companionship. It is hard to convince anyone who does not know a true Christian how real it is. There are also a lot of un-saved people in church. Do not judge God by the so called Christians you see and hear. If they do not glow with love and peace, they may not be real.

Yes and no. You can't take advantage of the religion just to make yourself feel better, but chances are once you're actually a part of it, you'll become an active believer.

Yes and no. They only truly belong if they truly believe when they join. If they just join so they can be part of a group and don't truly believe, they will be very unhappy with their choices.

yes, a social sense of belonging is very normal, gangs are a good example. but it is not always a bad thing, like sports fans.

We all are of God, so I guess you're right, I want to belong to God.
