Klieghs answer in incorrect, wrong. With his Red Cross notification he can get emergency leave and go to his father. He pays. Coordinate everything through the Red Cross. The reply suggesting a MAC flight is a good one. You'll have to investigate where there are MAC flights and the destinations. Complicated and maybe the Red Cross can help you. Maybe a local Army recruiter can be of help. A Congressman can provide you with info if it comes to that. The cost is on you, however. Ask the Red Cross and the Army Relief Agency for info. Good luck.

when you take leave you have to pay for your own tickets home, but he has an option to get a space A ticket, they are either free or cost less than 50 bucks (even from korea) but you are not guaranteed a seat. It sucks but if you really want to go home you have to put the effort and save money.

the answer is yes. that is why so few folks fly home while deployed abroad. there is the possibility that he could fly stand-bye on a military flight back to the states. MAC flights are tough because of most peoples time constraints, but it is certainly worth checking out.

if he's coming home on leave, he's responsible for the cost of the ticket. a 'space A' flight (if he doesn't know what it is, he can ask one of his supervisors for help) can save him money back to the states.
when he's at war, the military will fly him from iraq (or wherever he is) back to atlanta or dallas for free. from there, he'll have to buy his own flight.

It depends if this is his mid-tour flight home, or for his PCS. If it's his mid-tour, he pays for it. When I was stationed there, it was definitely cheaper to book reservations with one of the travel offices right off base. My wife looked the flights up back home, and I saved about $400 round trip. If it's his PCS move, the government either pays for it, or will reimburse him when he signs in at his new base.

His PCS flight will be paid for. But ordinary leave will come out of his pocket. Everyone is right on about Space-A. Tell him to get on the bus to Osan.

Simpliest answer is yes-he pays.
The Army pays to transport him and belonging to ROK, and back to his next assignment. Vacations (to visit family) are paid. Too bad, however an option is use the SPACE-AVAILABLE Flights leaving our Air Force Bases in Korea, and flying to a Air Base near you. very unpredictable schedule.
I wish your family and him well-You son is with a super unit in Korea, and they will work hard to take care of him wherever he deploys.

Talk to an officer about a 'Garison' flight home...
My dads in the navy and I managed one of these.
You can also get a last minute flight much much cheaper.
All the best.
