Usually curiosity or desperation. And then they brainwash you. That's how cults work. They offer what seems like a mysterious but miraculous fix-all to your problems and then hook you with mind-manipulating techniques and scare tactics. First they "love bomb" you, though. They make you feel safe and welcome and comfortable and then slowly start picking you apart, wearing you down, building you into a perfect, mindless follower.

Im an ex-scientologist.
As far as its "religion" it believes in God but mostly stops there. It does not believe in using prayer, or believing in miracles, or "turning your life over to God for guidance".
It does believe in fixing yourself thru self-help programs. They offer them in Personal Communications, Better Studying, fighting peer pressure, getting off drugs and alcohol, and even offer 1-on-1 counseling for deeper problems. The courses start cheap but the counseling stuff is about as expensive as any other such counseling.
I took the first two courses then quit. Great stuff. I use it all the time. In the couple years I hung out there I didnt see or hear any of the wierd stuff that people post here about it that they saw on South Park or read on some hate site.

I live in California and I am surrounded by them.
I see people go in shuffling and mumbling. Frowning and no eye contact.
After some of the courses they are open, happy, focused, great communicators and PRETTY. It's creepy. They are like vampires. Photographs show their true self. Even the celebs. Think about it. Crusie, Travolta, Kirstie Allen, Seinfeild. They all seem great in moving pictures but a still picture makes you wonder why you thought they were cute.
Personally I'm more interested in the Church of the SubGenius for slackers and procrastinators. Hail Bob!

The chance at fame.
I live in Hollywood, so I can tell you first hand from my observations....their "Celebrity Center" is within walking distance of the parish where I made my home for 20+ years:
When young actors come to Hollywood, they get taken to the Center, where they meet all sorts of famous celebrities and lots of free food and drink.
If they have any talent whatsoever, they then sign a contract that says they will give a large portion of their earnings to the Church of Scientology.
Then, the Tom Cruise's and the John Travolta's and the Jenna Elfman's of the world, seek to get them work and the Church of Scientology makes more money.

I think it's the fellowship, the celebs, and the popularity & press of it all.
Truthfully, that church is a money making machine. It's an industry more than it is a religion. Although there ARE practices, a set of beliefs and stringent rules. But they require a percentage of your income (much like the christian church... only there is frequently a contract involved), and they require you to drink/eat/etc. certain "clean" waters, foods, etc. which you have to purchase.
I think it's a scam but a very scary one as it tends to pray on weak minded and vulnerable people who are truly looking for answers and some sort of fulfillment.

It offers instant happiness and an end to the acute stress and depression they diagnose you with; without any need for prayer, ritual, etc, only money. No wonder it's so attractive to so many people.
Then it takes over your life.

Well what does paganism offer? What about Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism...? They all have something different to offer. What you pick depends on which offer suits you the best. I won't have the audacity to discriminate against anyone because their religious choice was different from mine...
