Move Or Stay?

My boyfriend that hates my children says that if I stay here in Calgary he will haunt me. Ok, my cusin here says move in with her and she will help keep him away. I think it wont work if he wants to terrorize me he will walk right through any one and any restrainning order too. My parents and sister want me to move back to Saskatchewan. I think it is best that way so there is distance between me and him. It is not easy to stalk some one if you have to drive 700 miles to get to them. I was just wanting your thoughts cause I am forever doubting myself.

First of all, congratulations that the question isn't Whether to leave him but rather How. Never, never, never waver from that!!

Second, if you can get evidence -- tapes or whatever -- that helps a lot.

Third, I'm assuming they're not HIS children -- that will make it a lot easier to keep restraining orders up.

Here's where I'm going with this. If you can get a permanent restraining order and keep it up, then the law and the police are permanently on your side. The judgment as to whether to move then becomes the judgment as to whether you think they'll do their jobs. However, if you can't keep a restraining order up, he has a lot of openings to harass you.

Ultimately, the decision here has to be yours, advised by local people. The answer is different in every situation (just what kinds of illegal violence is he prone to?), and also to every locality. What do the laws say in theory? How do the police react? How do the judges react? How important is it to have your friends and family conveniently available to testify in court?

I'm giving you generalities from the United States here myself.

Heck, I don't even know how likely it is that in Canada he does or doesn't have a gun. And that makes a huge difference in what you should do.
